As we await the resumption of most football leagues around the world ( due to ongoing covid19 pandemic)  a lot of argument has been ongoing about who is the best midfielder in premier league history. 

A lot of football lovers have come up with a list of players that should make the top 5. In this article, we would take a look at the top 5 midfielders in the premier league history and what made them exceptional.

1)Cesc Fabregas

Arsene Wenger brought the Spaniard to London in the summer of 2003 and the young star quickly adapted to life in England and was able to make 6 appearances in the Arsenal Invincible team. 6 seasons later he became Arsenal's skipper in 2010.

He played a total of 350 premier league games for both Arsenal and Chelsea and made 111 assists. Fabregas is known for his defence-splitting passes and his ability to locate players and create chances even in the most difficult positions.

2) Steven Gerrard


Ever loyal, ever faithful to the reds, Steven Gerrard is without a doubt a true Liverpool legend and his name won’t be forgotten in a hurry whenever the premier league is mentioned.

 Indeed, without a doubt, he deserves a place in the top 5. He spent an overwhelming 17 years in Liverpool’s senior team. His ability to score from long distances was his trademark. His only regret would be not winning the EPL with Liverpool.





3) Patrick Vieira


He was among the engine beyond the famous Arsenal invincible team. When he moved to Arsenal from Milan in 1996, many didn’t know he would later become one of the best midfielders in the league.

 The Frenchman was a natural-born leader in the Gunners midfield, with his height, strength and aggressiveness proving to be a valuable asset for Arsene Wenger. It allowed Vieira to dominate the midfield and set the tone for matches.

He left Arsenal after the invincible season in 2005, a hole was left in the team, and till date, that hole is yet to be filled. Every transfer window, Arsenal fans look with hope that a new Vieira would come to them.





4)Frank Lampard


The current Chelsea manager is next. Frank Lampard was exceptional when he graced the game of football. Lampard has won the Champions League, FA cup, league cup, Europa League and community shield.

He is, in fact, one of the most decorated players in premier league history. He is also Chelsea’s all-time top scorer with 211 goals

5) Paul Scholes


He wasn’t much of a goal scorer, but united fans would tell you the sauce he added to their game. The Manchester United legend was easily one of the best central midfielders of his generation, with his technical, passing and clever movement making him the full package.

 He could also play in different midfield roles.
Scholes won an impressive 11 Premier League titles across his 499 league appearances and 4 times player of the month for the red devils.
