Chelsea vs Ajax Match Preview

Chelsea Vs Ajax Match Preview

That 86th-minute winner from second-half substitute, Michy Batshuayi at the Amsterdam Arena two weeks ago, made it Chelsea’s second victory in this seasons UEFA ChampionsLeague. That puts them top of the table in group H even though both teams are on the same point.

They’ve been up and running and they’ve maintained a great degree of consistency so far. Apart from the 2-1 defeat they suffered in the hands of Manchester United in the league cup, the last time Chelsea lost a game was almost 2 months ago, in the hands of Liverpool. The omen is right and they’ve shown great determination and passion to win games, even under pressure.

Ajax, on the other hand, has been invincible this season, winning 10 games and managing just 2 draws this season in the Eredivisie. However their only defeat this season came from Chelsea  In the first leg of this encounter two weeks ago.
Ajax has recovered well from the defeat, as they’ve won the two games they’ve played after, including a very tough game against Feyenoord. Tonight at Stanford Bridge, they would be hoping to edge closer to qualifying for the round of 16  when they take on Frank Lampard’s men.

Team news

After missing their last five games due to injury, Ngolo Kante is ready to make a return today. He’s been battling with the groin injury he picked up while on international duty with France. But Frank Lampard has said that he is fit and set to feature in tonight’s games.

Ross Barkley and Andreas Christensen still remain out. Though they are back in training they won’t be available for this match against ajax.

As for Ajax, none of their players is currently injured or suspended. They have their full squad available. That should give their coach, Erik ten Hag's, room for selecting the best team that can take down Chelsea.

Previous meetings

This would be the second competitive meeting between the two clubs in their history. The first being the first leg of this encountered. Chelsea came out victorious by a lone goal.
But they have met 6 times in non-competitive games. Chelsea has won 4 times, drew once and lost once against the Dutch giants.

Players to watch

Christian Pulisic

He didn’t get off to a quick start we all expected in London. For some reasons he didn’t get enough playing time earlier on to show what he’s made of. But when he did, he marvelled us.

He has scored 4 goals in the last 3 games for Chelsea, proving doubters wrong and showing that he really deserves a spot in the starting eleven every week. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him start again today after bagging a goal at the weekend. For games like this, quality is needed, and he has the quality.

He has been nominated for the EPL player of the month for October. The versatile winger featured in all the blues matches in October, finding the back of the net once, and providing two assists. It Looks like we are beginning to see a new Hazard In Chelsea colours.

 Hakim Ziyech

One of the players that have been key to Ajax’s unbeaten run this season has been Ziyech. The midfielder has scored 6 goals and 8 assists in the Eredivisie and Champions League.

His through passes and key passes are very strong, little wonder he’s among the top assists In Europe this season. Chelsea defenders would have to be wary of his long-range shots and line-breaking passes when they meet tonight.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar's

36 years of age, he has played past his prime and equals. But despite having very few playing time this season, he has scored 4 goals in the Eredivisie.

He is very experienced games of this nature, having the players in the Champions League with Madrid and Ac Millan. Definitely, he won’t be starting tonight's game, but should he make another substitute appearance tonight, Chelsea's young defence should be careful of this experienced fellow.
